Ernest Richard Dilworth was born at Woolwich, Kent in August 1881 and entered the Royal Marine Artillery as a Gunner 2nd Class in January 1899. Advanced to Gunner at the end of the same year, he served in H.M.S. Barfleur from June 1900 to 1902, in which period he witnessed active service off China (Medal). On the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was serving at the Fareham 'stone frigate' H.M.S. Collingwood, and he remained employed ashore until being embarked for France as a Gunner in the R.M. Howitzer Brigade in May 1916. He was still serving in this capacity when embarked for England for dispersal in early 1919; sold with copied service record.
