Chamberlain, S.P.O., H.M.M.L. 291), together with the recipient's Marine Society Reward of Merit, silver, the reverse engraved, 'W. E. Chamberlain, 19 Nov. 1929', suspension bar on the second a little bent, edge bruising, contact marks and polished, nearly very fine or better (5)

William Ernest Chamberlain was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire in July 1888 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in August 1906. Advanced to Stoker Petty Officer in early 1913, his subsequent wartime appointments included the merchant fleet auxiliary Whimbrel (December 1914-May 1915); the monitor M. 18 (July 1915-March 1916); the minelayer Angora (April-December 1916); the minelayer Perdita (January 1917-June 1918), and the coastal defence ship Gorgon (June 1918 -March 1919). Having then been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal whilst serving in H.M. Motor Launch 291 in December 1921, Chamberlain was pensioned ashore in October 1928; sold with copied service record.
