Walter Barnes was born at Selsey, Sussex in May 1878 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in November 1898. He was advanced to Stoker 1st Class in July 1906 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1913. During the Great War he served at H.M.S. Tamar in Hong Kong from July 1916 to June 1918, in addition to seagoing duty in the destroyer Virago in the closing months of the war. He was pensioned ashore in January 1921; sold with copied service record.
