James William Poppy was born at Gosport, Hampshire in February 1894 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in February 1912. During the Great War he served in the battleship H.M.S. Hibernia from February 1914 until October 1917, and in the cruiser Penelope from November 1917 until May 1918, when he came ashore to an appointment in the Chatham Division. Hibernia served in the Dardanelles, where she covered the evacuations of 'V' and 'W' Beaches at Cape Helles in early January 1916. Poppy was discharged in the summer of 1922, when his intended place of residence was King's Lynn; sold with copied service record
