Grenada
Postal History
Straight-line Datestamp: 1799 (23 Mar.) entire folio letter from John Carruthers to Glasgow "P.Packet" and rated "4/10"; the flap, which opens for display, bears a fairly faint strike of the serif letter "grenada/mar 23 99" in black with London transit (6.5) alongside; two vertical filing folds and some paper wear, especially at folds and edges. The letter demonstrated some of the frustrations of the sugar business at the time, " The Cork Convoy is arrived at last but no account of the Mary which is a sad disappointment, it seems she never joined the Convoy, and is supposed to have gone up the channel to Falmouth in expectation of falling in with the Portsmouth fleet ...". This is the earliest recorded date of use and rare use of the year date on this postmark which was introduced at the request of Lloyds of London to prevent fraudulent insurance claims. Photo
