French Post Office
1897 (6 Oct.) underpaid envelope to Berlin bearing 1c. on 3c. [20] and Small 2c. on 3c. horizontal pair [1-2] tied by Chinkiang Dollar chop with France "Chine" 25c. alongside tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s., the reverse with smudged Shanghai Dollar chop in blue-black (7.10), "ligne n/paq. fr. no.2" c.d.s. and German arrival. Clean and fine.
A very scarce 5c. franking and one of only two overseas covers with the Chinkiang Dollar chop (there are only 5 Chinkiang covers in total)

Prior to 1st October 1897 covers franked with 5c. were almost all via the Japanese Post Office to either Japan or U.S.A. This cover was sent via the French Post Office to Germany. The Foreign Post Office collected 5c. silver dollar for a 25c. French stamp, thus any mail with 5c. shortage was accepted by the Chinese Post Office
