1883 (13 Jan.) opened-out envelope to Exeter bearing, on the reverse, wide margins 3ca. red [17] with part top margin, 5ca. light orange-yellow [6] with thick paper 1ca. emerald-green [20] of Setting VI or VII with wide right margin tied by good strikes of Customs Newchwang c.d.s., Customs Tientsin (20.1), Customs Shanghai in red (5.2) and Exeter arrival (19.3); the address side with France 25c. tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. (7.2) with a second strike alongside. Some thin paper reinforcements at side and along part of the fold. A good cover with all three values and scarce use of the wide margin 5ca. on cover.


Paying the single rate 9ca. to Europe which was increased in the 1882 postal tarriffs

Note that the ink on the 1ca. stamp is quite shiny.



Part of the Bandinel correspondence. Rev. James Bandinel was born in 1814 in London, the only son of James Bandinel, of the foreign office, and Marian Eliza Hunter. Poor health led Bandinel to give up his living and retire to Exeter where he died in 1893.
