1878-83 The Large Dragon Issue
Foreign Post Office Covers
Japanese Post Office
1881 (13 Sept.) opened-out envelope to Boston "Viâ San Francisco" bearing, on the reverse, 1ca. dark green strip of three [3-5] with right margin and 5ca. light orange-yellow pair [5-4] and single [8] with right margin from Setting II, cancelled by Customs Newchwang c.d.s. with Shanghai Customs (19.9) alongside and tied by San Francisco and U.S. transit c.d.s.; the address side with 1875 Cherry Blossom 10s. ultramarine, syllabic 4, tied by cork crossroads obliterator with "i.j. postal agency/shanghai" (28.9) and Yokohama (11.10) c.d.s.
A delightful and appealing 18ca. franking. Despite the normal size envelope, the 10s. franking indicates double rate (14ca.) and, although this seems very early in the winter, there is an additional 4ca. winter rate.
It is very unusual to find the Cherry Blossom stamps used on these covers
This is the only extant cover sent from Newchwang to U.S.A.
