1878-83 The Large Dragon Issue
Foreign Post Office Covers
French Post Office
1881 (6 Aug.) opened-out envelope to the Isle of Man bearing, on the reverse, 1c. yellow-green pair [11-12] with left margin and 5ca. light orange-yellow block of four [16-24/22-23] with left margin from Setting II tied by Customs Newchwang c.d.s. (yeardate inverted); the address side bearing France 35c. pair tied by "5104" gross chiffres obliterator with "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. (12.8) alongside with "mod a paris" c.d.s. in red. The reverse with Shanghai Customs, Liverpool (26.9) and Ramsey c.d.s. The lower tip of the 1ca. stamps overlap the edge of the envelope and there is some typical light soiling.
An unusual and stunning franking paying double the 11ca. rate to U.K. via Brindisi. The 5ca. block is a rare multiple to find on cover
