3 Candareens, Overseas Mail
1880 (27 Oct.) small envelope to Gloucester, England bearing, on the reverse, 3ca. vermilion-red pair [22-23] with 5ca. yellow [12] tied by "customs/newchwang" c.d.s. and Gloucester Station arrival (14.12) with Hong Kong transit alongside (8.11); the address side with British Post Office Shanghai c.d.s. (4.11), unfortunately the Hong Kong stamp has been cut off. The envelope was a little roughly opened, nevertheless and attractive and appealing franking paying the 11 ca. rate

provenance: Warren G. Kauder, May 1972

literature: James Whang, The Large Dragon Covers, number 84

The 11ca. rate was the premium rate to England via Brindisi in Italy, although there is no indication of this route written on the cover. This rate became effective from 15th November 1879.

This cover was sent by the Winter Overland Service from Newchwang to Shanghai via Tientsin.

It is believed that there are eight covers recorded bearing this franking. Another cover from the same writer, to Wakefield was sold in the Beckemann collection (May 1997), this example bearing the Hong Kong 10c. purple adhesive
