Lot: 440

Wessex, Edward the Elder (899-924), Pennies (2), 1.06g, two line (HT1) type, Deorwald/Grimwald?, small cross pattée within inner circle, rev. - / ald mo, divided by three small cross pattée, trefoil above? and below (N.649; S.1087), 40% flan loss, crack at 7 o'clock, peck marks on obverse, very fine, 0.84g, two line (HP1) type, mint in Wessex, Raegenulf, small cross pattée within inner circle, rev. raegn / [vlf mo], divided by three small cross pattée, pellet above and below? (N.649; S.1087), a fragment, evidence of pecking on obverse, good silver, nearly extremely fine (2)

The appearance of pecks marks on these two coins evidences that they circulated in Scandinavian-controlled areas. This despite being present in the 'Anglo-Saxon' batch of the Eboracum hoard and with no other coins from either batches displaying signs of metal testing. Indeed it is unusual to see peck marks on coins of this period.
