Wessex, Edward the Elder (899-924), Penny, 1.25g, two line (HT1) type, Danelaw imitation struck at a mint in the NE, Raegenulf?, small cross pattée within inner circle, rev. regei / vle mo, divided by three small cross pattée, trefoil above and below, regei retrograde (CTCE 248 var; N.649 var; S.1087 var), c. 10% flan loss, scratch by reverse cross, a very pleasing strike with mostly original surfaces remaining, extremely fine
Pennies in the name of moneyer Raegenulf are known to have been struck in both Wessex and Western Mercia. Therefore, the prototype for the current piece would have had to travel from this area into the Danelaw and was then used as a model.
