1848 (Sept.) entire letter from "Otakou" to London, rated "4" (deleted) and "1/-" and showing Crowned Circle "paid/at/wellington.new.zealand" handstamp (crossed by filing crease) at lower left, Wellington (21.10) and London (27.4) c.d.s. on reverse. Photo

Note: The Post Office at Otakou was operated at the Whaling Station of the same name until 1848 when it moved across the harbour. In this letter the writer comments on the inconvenience of the post office being located so far from the new settlement of Dunedin, and his intention to write to the Lieutenant-Governor about the situation
