Ship Letter Mail Featuring Early Handstamps
1848 (28 Apr.) large part front from Edinburgh by "private Ship Blundell" to Nelson, rated "Pd 8d", "8" and "9" and showing framed "castle/street", Edinburgh and London (29.4) datestamps, a fine strike of the extremely rare "otakou/new zealand" oval datestamp (18.9) and Nelson arrival c.d.s. (27.10). One of only two recorded examples of the Otakou handstamp in private hands. Photo

Note: The Otago settlers did not approve of the name Otakou and in December 1848 it was changed to Otago
