1840 One Penny Black Plate Ib Covers 1840 (29 Oct.) cover front bearing KJ in a deep shade, small to enormous margins showing a portion of the design below, cancelled by a part strike of dark red Maltese Cross and superbly tied by an undated "tredegar" town cancellation and showing two strikes of the open circle "abergavenny" c.d.s.; addressed to Putney, Surrey and showing a part strike of the London arrival c.d.s. A fine and attractive example of this rare type of cancellation Estimate £ 2,000-3,000 provenance: ´Maximus´, May 1970 Note: The creation of Tredegar Iron Company turned Tredegar into a boom town in the 19th century. The population in 1801 was just over 1100. With the influx of people searching for work with the T.I.C., by 1881 the population was boosted to over 34,000. By 1805, a 24 mile stretch of tramline had been laid to transport coal and iron ore to Newport docks. The track was laid by Tredegar Iron Company and Monmouthshire Canals. The trams were pulled by teams of horses.
