1840 One Penny Black Plate Ib Covers 1840 (13 Aug.) wrapper bearing OK, small to large margins and well tied to wrapper addressed to Wigtown by a double strike of the distinctive brown or purple-brown Maltese Cross with boxed Newtonstewart datestamp on flap which opens well for display. A clean and fresh example of this rare coloured cross which is struck quite boldly. A rarity of exhibition quality. S.G. Spec. A2vi, £8000 Estimate £ 2,000-3,000 Note: In Maltese Cross Cancellations by Alcock and Holland, they describe a Newtonstewart cross dated 16th August 1840 as being in purple-brown. A 2d. cover with a similar cross in known dated 6th November 1840. It is apparent that the ink used at this post office was being mixied in such a way to produce some very distinctive colours at this time.
