1840 One Penny Black Plate Ib Covers 1840 (31 July) wrapper bearing EI in a deep shade bearing a private serpentine roulette on three sides, well tied by a neat strike of a slightly oily, dull red Maltese Cross on local wrapper addressed to the Quay Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, the cover marked "PP", the reverse with despatch c.d.s. in light blue; vertical folding crease clear of the adhesive and some light soiling. An unusual and intriguing cover believed to be the earliest known private roulette on cover. R.P.S. Certificate (1976) states "The margins cut abnormally before affixing to the lettersheet" Estimate £ 3,000-4,000
