Northern Nigeria Fort Goldie 1903 envelope to Woking, marked "Fort Goldie, North Nigeria" and "No stamps available", showing Plymouth squared-circle transit d.s. (28.3) and "2d/b.16" h.s. with, on reverse, unclear Northern Nigeria datestamp and arrival c.d.s.; the envelope with some minor stains. Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: Fort Goldie, named after Sir George Goldie, The Chairman of the Royal Niger Company, was originally built by the French in 1895 and named Fort D´Arenburg. It was evacuated by the French in September 1895. It is on the River Niger between Boussa and Jebba opposite Bajibo. After evacuation by the French it formed part of the Royal Niger Company´s garrisons. Due to disturbances in the ranks of the Royal Niger Constabulary it was taken over by the WAFF in 1899.
