Auction: 1028 - The "Wilkin" Collection of British West Africa Postal History and British Africa Stamps from the Vestey Collection
Lot: 293

Northern Nigeria West African Frontier Force 1901 (16 Aug.) envelope (with lengthy contents) written by Lt. Wilkin at Odeni to his step-brother in London, bearing 1901 1d. tied by "northern nigeria" c.d.s. and showing arrival d.s. (13.9) on reverse. The contents tell of the arrival of Major McClintock, Seaforth Highlanders, to prepare for the Yola expedition in September. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: The Emir of Yola was one of the principle slave traders in West Africa and it was the British intention to put a stop to the slave trading. Another objective of the campaign was to reinstate Fataralla as Emir of Bornu. Fataralla was son of Rabbeh a former slave but became a governor in Egyptian Sudan. Rabbeh was summoned by the Mahdi to Omdurman but took the view that it was a hopeless cause and marched his army through Darfur to Dikwa near Lake Chad. He was eventually killed by the French, as was Fataralla.
