Auction: 1028 - The "Wilkin" Collection of British West Africa Postal History and British Africa Stamps from the Vestey Collection

Northern Nigeria West African Frontier Force 1901 (July) envelope (with lengthy original contents) from Lt. Wilkin to his step-brother in London, bearing 1900 1d. tied by red manuscript "PO, Ibi, 23/7/01" and showing, on reverse, "northern nigeria" (30.7) and arrival (30.8) datestamps. The long letter describing chiefly the shooting of game whilst the writer was on expedition from Ibi which was "...considered very successful, as we gave them a very bad time and opened up the roads. We marched 422 miles in 29 days....we killed at least 60 men and burnt innumerable villages and compounds...". There is also interesting, and far from favourable, comment on the praise given to Baden-Powell over the relief of Mafeking. Rare. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 provenance: T.V. Roberts, April 1989
