Antarctica 1921-22 Shackleton-Rowett Expedition by Sir Ernest Shackleton and succeeded by Frank Wild Undated envelope to England showing a fine strike of the very rare "quest/r.y.s." handstamp in violet; the upper right corner where the adhesive would have been torn away, together with five original photographs from the Picture Library of the London Daily Mail, three showing Shackleton with other members of the expedition prior to departure, one at St. Pauls Rock between Brazil and West Africa and one taken from Quest in the ice pack, and four other photographs including "Wild at crow´s nest" and one of the Quest. Also two pages of expedition headed paper with typed notes regarding Shackleton´s burial arrangements. A fascinating lot Estimate £ 300-400 Note: "Quest" left Rio for South Georgia on 18 December and arrived there on 4 January 1922. Shortly after their arrival Shackleton suffered a heart attack and died the following day at the age of 48. Frank Wild, Shackleton´s second-in-command took over and decided that the expedition should carry on. Shackleton´s body was taken by the "Professor Gruvel" to Montevideo. Lady Shackleton decided that her husband should be buried in the cemetery at Grytviken and he was interred there on 5 March 1922
