Antarctica 1907-10 British Antarctic Expedition by Ernest H. Shackleton 1908 (14 Jan.) B.A.E. crested envelope, complete with letter, from "Leo" to A.E. Blunt in Sydney, bearing K.E.II Land 1d. rose-carmine cancelled with c.d.s. for 15th. January, the first day of issue; the letter, headed "The Nimrod" giving a graphic account of their rough voyage to the edge of the ice, having been towed there by the Koonya, one pony and one dog having died, and six puppies being born, the reverse with Dunedin (22.1), Ashfield (28.1) and Sydney (23.1) c.d.s.. The envelope and contents with some faults though a rare letter from a member of the crew. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: The "Nimrod" was towed by "Koonya" until the ice was reached. This reduced the amount of coal that was used by "Nimrod", and the remaining excess coal still on board "Koonya" was transferred to "Nimrod" when the ice was reached. When "Koonya" left "Nimrod" she took with her mail that had been written by crew members and first called at Port Chalmers.
