Antarctica 1901-04 British National Antarctic Expedition by Robert F. Scott The First Relief Expedition 1903 (2 Mar.) Morning crested envelope and letter from Robert Scott at Mc.Murdo Strait to Capt. Egerton in London and redirected to H.M.S. Vernon at Portsmouth, bearing 1d. Universal cancelled with Lyttelton squared-circle d.s. (date unclear) and London c.d.s. (4.5), the reverse with Christchurch (25.3), London (4.5) and Portsmouth (5.5) c.d.s.; the three page letter refers to his "enforced change of plans" and hopes "no one in England will accuse him of rashness in placing the ship here....I am hastening the Morning off as the young ice forms very quickly directly the wind drops, temperatures are falling and already average well below zero and we have such little experience in these regions to go on"; the envelope and stamp with some defects though a wonderful letter from Scott, written the day that Morning departed from the Antarctic.
