Antarctica 1901-04 British National Antarctic Expedition by Robert F. Scott The First Relief Expedition 1903 (Feb.) Discovery crested envelope from Louis Bernacchi, the physicist, to London, bearing Expedition vignette in deep blue with manuscript "S.S. Discovery . Lat. 77:51 Feb. 1903" and 1d. Universal (2), all three cancelled with Lyttelton squared-circle d.s. (25.3), the reverse with Christchurch (25.3) and London (4.5) c.d.s.; the label with some foxing in places though a rare cover. Photo Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 Note: Louis Bernacchi was born in Belgium. He first served in Antarctica when he joined Carstens Borchgrevink´s 1898-1900 Southern Cross Expedition as a physicist. He was again physicist on the "Discovery" Expedition and was the only member of the team to have previously visited the Antarctic. Scott invited him to participate in his second ill-fated expedition but he declined due to family commitments
