Antarctica 1901-04 British National Antarctic Expedition by Robert F. Scott 1901 (10 Dec.) envelope, complete with contents, (both items showing the engraved Expedition crest in blue) from Charles Royds at Lyttelton to Admiral Markham at Sheerness and redirected to London, bearing 1d. Universal lightly cancelled with squared-circle d.s and with Sheerness transit c.d.s. (21.1) alongside, the reverse with Christchurch and Sheerness c.d.s.; the letter contains some interesting data as to the behaviour of the Discovery during it´s passage from England to New Zealand and includes "Here we are at our last port of call & the passage from England has been instructive" and "Capt. Scott is a times a little hasty & wants several things done at once, but in all, is excellent and I can safely say trusted & respected by all". Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: Charles Royds was the first lieutenant on the "Discovery" Expedition. His duties were to do with the every day running of the ship, dealing with the crew and their duties, etc. Royds rose to become an Admiral and was later Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, London
