Uruguay1876, Aug. 6. Cover from Montevideo to Genoa, bearing 10c. green Montevideo printing paying the internal postage, tied by barred oval, then carried by the Lavarello "Sud America" steamer, arriving at Genoa where Italic"Da Montevideo/coi Postali italiani" and 1 l. adhesive as postage due applied (from 1.2.1876 the Italian rate increased from 90c to 1l). From May 1876 to June 1877 the Italian postal agency at the consulate of Montevideo remained closed following malpractice by a postal service employee whereby letters were not delivered and money orders misappropriated; the Lavarello company temporarily acted as a substitute for the Italian consulate, carrying out the postal service. Illustrated on page 307 of the Italian "Post-Offices Abroad 1852-1890" by Zanaria-Serra-Del Negro. Very fine and scarce. Ciardi 36A.
