Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 313
ColombiaPanama1859, Aug. 27. Entire letter from Bogotá to New York (Lanman & Kemp correspondence), with oval handstamp on dispatch denoting prepayment with application, prior to the period of validity, of 20 centavos single postage from Bogotá to Colón via Honda and Cartagena (this tariff being officially later into force from 1.9.1859), with "20" and "25" markings on front and reverse, the latter corresponding to the "sobreporte" single weight fee paid for correspondence addressed to countries with which New Granada had no postal agreements (this fee of 15.5.1846 was applied on mail with British involvement in its carriage, thus facilitating a reduced forwarding period). From Cartagena to Colón conveyed by RMSPC ship, struck in transit by red "Administracion de Correos de Colon/Franca" circular postmark, thence transferred to the C.J. Fox agent (red oval cachet) for further transmission to New York. The other item, in private hands, demonstrating the usage in advance of the 1.9.1859 rate; this example is further enhanced by being sent to an external destination via Panama.
