NicaraguaOutgoing Mail1792, April 17. Entire letter from Bluefields to Bristol (Great Britain), written in English -from circa 1600 the area of Bluefields was connected with the presence of European pirates; in 1740 the locals ceded the territory to the British, and colonists arrived in 1744 with black slaves. In 1796, the sovereignty of Spain on the Mosquito Coast was recognized by the British, with very few British people remaining in the area-. Postmarked in transit at Havana with two-line "Islas De/Barlovento." handstamp in red (P.E. 31), following its journey with carriage of the Spanish Royal Mail to Corunna, then overland via Bordeaux (France) to Portsmouth. During its transit in France, the letter received the manuscript "16" sols French rate notation, which was deleted on arrival and rated "1/11" 1 shilling 11 pence. The letter took three months to get its destination. A very rare usage of the "Islas De Barlovento" postmark, denoting a Spanish Amercian postal demarcation, on mail to England. Ex Kouri.
