Auction: SW1020 - Maritime Mail of Spanish Colonies in America
Lot: 65
CubaOutgoing Mail1822, July 27. Entire letter from Havana to San Sebastián (Spain), carried by the war frigate "Francesa Antígona", charged at 16 reales in manuscript, with neat strike of "Nueva/España" two-line handstamp (P.E. 39) in dull red. The "Nueva España" postmarks were applied in Veracruz, although an additional type was also used in transit in Havana and Cádiz to denote mail originating from Mexico; in this instance, this marking was erroneously applied on mail emanating from Cuba and not from Mexico. Worm hole impinging on the marking. An extremely rare usage of the "Nueva España" postmark on mail from Cuba.
