Lot: 249

Rumania1858, 40 parale greenish blue on white, yellowish paper, wide even margins on all four sides, previously cancelled with blue datestamp of Berlad, and subsequently re-used to fraud the post, paying the single rate on cover from Berlad to Galatz, being horizontally applied (face down) with the purpose of facilitating the non-detection of the fraud, tied to cover by the same device "Berlad/Moldova" c.d.s. on 8 September, being repeated at upper right, showing arrival on reverse two days later. Horizontal crease barely impinging on the adhesive and virtually not visible. A fascinating usage of great rarity and interest, with only five fraudulent usages recorded on cover from Berlad, this being unique exhibiting this single franking. Files in the Bucharest State Archive -founded by K. Dragomir (as stated by Dr. Heimbüchler in his handbook, volume I, with this item being illustrated on page 176)- stated "postal irregularities"; consequently the Moldavian Minister of Finance decided on 2.11.1859 that the postal clerks at Botosani, Berlad and Roman should be relieved from their duties. Surviving classic covers demonstrating postal frauds are great rarities. Cert. Heimbüchler. Mi. 6by. Photo
