Lot: 211

1856, 10c. grey black, two vertical strips of five harmoniously applied, horizontally, at top and base of envelope sent registered to Schaerbeck (Belgium), with a further pair of this value being applied on reverse (portion opened out for display at bottom), all cancel by nine-bars ovals with blue strikes of Luxembourg c.d.s. and italic "Chargé", both also tying the franking, and framed "PD" (hardly visible as a result of a surface scuff to envelope). Some faults to cover, mainly on reverse, vertical crease at left affecting to stamps and other imperfections in lower strip. A visually striking exhibition item, one of the most important and spectacular first-issue frankings known on cover, further enhanced by the very rare registered usage. It is also considered as the most important known franking to Belgium, which was a destination with considerable postal traffic. Certs. Goebel and Demuth. Prifix 1j, Mi. 1d. Ex Del Puente and Houser.
