Auction: SW1015 - The Philatelic Collector's Series
Lot: 185

1871, laid batonné paper, 1d. black on rose se-tenant with 9d. black on rose, the lower denomination representing position 16, the latter featuring comma after "Express" type error from position 22, fresh with large part original gum. Some splitting in the frame lines of the lower adhesive, of no significance for this piece. A great rarity of Fiji with very few se-tenant multiples so far in existence, of which this pair is unique exhibiting the type error. Cert. Brandon. S.G. 5+8a. Ex Frazer and Baillie. Collectors worldwide are fascinated by se-tenant combinations in classic philately, which are usually highly sought-after and deserved high estimations according to its, usually, great rarity; as a matter of fact, se-tenant pieces are true "aristocrats" in, for example, South America, as demonstrated by true gems such as the "Pack Strip" (surely the most important item of Latin America) and the "Xiphopagus Pair" of Brazil, or the famous "Wickersham Strip" in the Colombian State of Tolima, with estimates ranging from six to seven digits.
