H.A.P.A.G.1898, Dec. 2. Danish West Indies 3c. postal stationery envelope (slightly reduced at base) from St. Thomas to Hamburg, uprated with 1873-79 1c. two singles and strip of three, and 4c. single and pair, thus making up a 20 centimes franking which served to pay a double letter rate to Europe, with manuscript date on dispatch at right. Cover carried by the HAPAG "Flandria", as confirmed by the straight-line postmark used to tie the franking (as it was the norm after the HAPAG stamps had been withdrawn), with the franking being additionally tied by "Aus Westindien/P. Hamburg. Dampfer/Über Cöln" c.d.s., with German transits and arrival on reverse. Few toned perforations and imperfections in upper left corner. A rare and visually appealing cover.
