Société Francaise des Trains Renard. Action F 100, Paris, 29 Janvier 1907. #15099. Charles Renard (1847–1905) was a French military engineer. In 1884 he constructed the airship "La France" which was propelled by an electric engine and the first flying machine which was able to return to the place where it took-off. In 1903 he invented the Renard Road Train first built by Darracq and later in England by Daimler. The leading motor unit generated the power. This was then transmitted by a continuous shaft linked between the carriages by a universal joint that was connected to the driving wheels of each carriage. Each vehicle is steered by its predecessor through a series of rods and linkages and when a Train Renard rounds a corner each vehicle follows precisely in the track of its predecessor. After the inventors death, the Société francaise des Trains Renard was established in 1906. Only the French and German Army used the Train Renard. Mainly due to the heavy tax on this kind of vehicle, the Train Renard did not sell well to private customers. In 1911 the company was liquidated.
