Société Française du Vacuum Cleaner. Part bénéficiaire au porteur. Paris, 19 Juin 1903, #1821. The British engineer Hubert Cecil Booth (1871-1955) invented the first powered vacuum cleaner in 1901. It was a large device; powered initially by an internal combustion engine, then soon followed by an electrically powered model. Both designs were extremely bulky, and had to be transported by horse and carriage. To market his invention, in 1902 Booth founded the British Vacuum Cleaner and Engineering Company. Initially, Booth did not attempt to sell his machine, but rather sold cleaning services. The vans of the company were bright red; uniformed operators would haul hose off the van and route it through the windows of a building to reach all the rooms inside. One year later the French Vacuum Cleaner Company was founded. With the image of one of the companies operator at work and the company seal with the logo “Sans poussière, salubre, rapide, économique”. Tears repaired. VF.
