Repubblica Romana. Banknote (assegnato Paoli 7) 9. September 1798 (23 Fruttifero 7) Nr. 109117 (?). The short-lived Repubblica Romana was proclaimed on 15 February 1798, after Louis Alexandre Berthier, one of Napoleon’s generals, had invaded the papal state five days before. Berthier marched into city of Rome unopposed; his troops looting the treasures of the Vatican. Pope Pius VI was removed, taken prisoner and deported to Tuscany and then to France, were he died the following year. On 28 November 1798 Rome was taken by the troops of Ferdinand IV from Naples with support from the British in order to restore Papal authority. In December the French army won the battle of Civita Catellana and control of Rome changed hands once more. In September 1799 the Neopolitan troops put an end to the Repubblica Romana. VF.
