Auction: SW1002 - Latin America, including the Tito Collection - Part I
Lot: 504

1862-63, 5c. rose, mostly huge margins showing parts of adjoining stamps, in mixed franking with three examples of 1867-73 ´´Próceres´´ 5c. vermilion, on 21 March 1868 cover from Buenos Aires to Montevideo (Uruguay), tied by Buenos Aires cds´s, all covering the quadruple weight letter rate not exceeding 16 ´´adarmes´´. Only in February and March 1868 was this ´Escuditos´ value sporadically in circulation being a very late and exceptional use. The 1974 Kneitschel catalogue mentions this very late use and only registers two single copies used in February, with no mention of mixed frankings. An extraordinary postal history rarity of Argentine philately, being the only recorded cover proving the existence of this mixed issues franking which also exhibits the latest recorded date and usage in March, which was previously unrecorded. A stunning exhibition item of great visual impact. Cert. Del Mazo, R. Kneitschel and Solari. Kn 10, 36. Ex ´´Patagonia´´ collection. Starting Price US$ 10,000
