Tuan chi jui (Duan Qirui): 1919 (14 Oct.) typed letter to London on note paper of the Frontier Defence Bureau, Peking signed "Tuan chi jui" and includes a sheet of paper with his calligraphy which reads "Universal Neighborhood". An important and unusual historical item from this turbulent period of the history of China. Photo

With the declaration of the Republic of China in 1912 the country was divided between the north and the south. Sun yat sen governed the south. In the north, after the death of the president Yuan Shikai, the north was prone to various power struggles. Tuan chi jui sided with the European allies in the First World War forming the National Protection Army. He held several prominent positions including President and Premier
