Auction: CSS57B - Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong
Lot: 1140

The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $5, expedient specimen on issued note, 18.8.1930, serial number S/F 056202, similar to the above, handsigned at lower left and handwritten 'SPECIMEN' on obverse and reverse in red ink. Original, fresh crisp paper. The cataloguer has seen other examples of expedient specimens over the last couple of years whereby issued notes have been converted to specimens and compared to other types, raised values in the Roman series is especially rare. It only be surmised this was done when a specimen was needed and no formal copies were available.
(Pick 53), original crisp good very fine with 4 small pinhole clusters at upper left. The highest grades in the PMG population report are 35 and 40. This note would be amongst the highest grades had it not been converted into an expedient specimen. A true gem.
