Lot: 636

The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $25, ca.1863, serial number 2802, Hand signed at left and right. The face in blue and stamped "cancelled" twice. Faded and rust stained at bottom & right edge. The back in red and somewhat better, with a few handwritten chops. The note gives the impression of having been stored in a tin can for a considerable period of time. Excessively rare, one of only three examples known. While these three notes were stored together in a can, this is the finest by a considerable margin. *One of three examples discovered at the Bank's London head office during World War II and sold in 1995 in a London auction. The first Chartered Bank Hong Kong notes were issued during the last months of 1862. Thus this $25 note was issued during the first year of the commencement of the Bank's issue at Hong Kong. *Accompanied by a contemporary handwritten memo of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China, which reads in part: "IAC Hongkong. 25$ No.2802 part of 720 (notes) shipped 18 Aug 1863." (Note: IAC = "India Australia China") (Pick 23), PMG 6 NET Good (Stamp Cancelled, Repaired, Discolouration, Rust). One of only three issued notes known. The other two notes have been considerably repaired and redrawn and thus this is the sole note surviving in original form. Ultra rare, and exceptionally important.
