Hong Kong Treaty Ports
Tientsin
1874 (1 Jan.) printed entire to Hong Kong from E.Meyer & Co announcing changes to their business, sent printed paper rate and bears 1863-71 2c. pale brown just tied by "B62" in black and, on the reverse, Hong Kong code "C" arrival c.d.s. (2.1); there is some light ageing and reinforced folds where the paper is beginning to split.
A rare and desirable item of early mail from Tientsin. This letter was sent before the 1882 packet agency was established in Tientsin and it is thought that the limited items of post were sent via the British Consulate and carried directly to Shanghai or Hong Kong where the mail was cancelled. A fantastic cover of great exhibition calibre. Photo
Although the printed letter is dated 1 January, it would have been sent some days earlier to anticipate it's arrival near the printed date, when the company changes were to be made.
Very few civilain letters came from Tientsin at this time, there was not formal postal service and the earliest Customs Post is recorded on 31 January 1878
