1844 (26 July) entire letter from "H M Steamer Spiteful, East Coast of China" to Oxford "viâ Bombay and Southampton" rated at "1/-" and bearing, on the reverse, Hong Kong type 7 c.d.s., London and Oxford arrival (12.11). Interesting contents by an officer who had been acting as interpreter to the British Consulate in Shanghai. A fine and very early cover from Shanghai and pays the 1/- rate which was levied on letters carried by H.M. Ships (the ordinary letter rate was 4d.), very few covers depict this special rate and this is early use of the Hong Kong datestamp. Photo
