1859 (8 Feb.) a cover from U.S.A. to US Navy Sailor on board the US Frigate Powhatan at Hong Kong, bearing Jefferson 5c. red brown, tied by Washington, DC cds. Sent to New York /Br Pkt exchange office with cds beside in red (16.2), on the reverse London foreign office transit (28.2) cds in red, and arrival on Hong Kong on 25 Apr. with the elusive small broken-ring c.d.s. Webb type 12 c.d.s. with index letter C.
Dr. Andrew Cheung recorded 29 examples of type 12 on incoming and outgoing covers between 1857 - 1859 and this is illustrated as figure 20 (HKSC J. 403, Oct. 2022). Among the type 12 covers recorded, there are only three addressed to this famous ship and it is the only known with the rare 1857/60 5cts. red-brown shade and earliest use of the index letter C according to the 2022 census.
