Jiang Xia Tang, Seattle, United States, China crowdfunding receipt of $5, (Yi)si year (1905), despite the wide influence of the Heaven and Earth Society among overseas Chinese communities, the organisations were generally loose and lacked formal leadership. The failure of the Hundred Days Reform in China in 1898 lead to the movement leaders fleeing overseas, and they saw these rebel communities as a means to spread their own ideologies of supporting the Qing dynasty government under the guise of Reformation. The general low level of education of the overseas communities meant that the Reformers were able successfully seize control of these societies or divert support from within to set up their own Royalist organisations such as the present example.
