"A1" Obliterator
1878 (10 July) Knowles envelope to London "via Brindisi" bearing 4c. grey (3) tied by fair strikes of the "A1" obliterator with the despatch c.d.s. (Proud D3) alongside; underpaid and there is a superb strike of large "T" in circle alongside (Proud UP12), different rate marks with "2½" and "6" in blue crayon plus "5" in black ink, the reverse with Hong Kong (12.7) and London (27.8) c.d.s. The tax mark appears to have been applied in Amoy and is rare thus

The first U.P.U. rate was 12c. via Marseilles and 16c. via Brindisi
