1842 (12 Mar.) a long entire letter from John R. Morrison to his sister in London marked "China Expedition J R Morrison", "pr India Steamer" and rated "2/8", the flap (which opens for display) bears a superb strike of oval "forwarded by/lyall matheson & co/calcutta", boxed Calcutta Ship Letter datestamp (5.5) and London arrival (4.8). In the letter he indicates that he had just returned from Chusan, " ...The latest news we have from Chusan & Ningpo are not the most gratifying - the 2nd mate of one of the transports, and a lasear with him had been treacherously killed (at Chinhai) - another native had been carried off from Chusan ... ", he then speculates on the reinforcements and their push to Hangchow. A good letter from this important person
