Auction: 9037 - The "Pierron" Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours
Lot: 1294

Ireland 1987 (1 Oct.) Anniversaries and Commemorations 24p., an upper right corner example showing traffic lights with yellow omitted, fine.Very rare. With normal corner traffic light block. Hamilton-Bowen Certificate (2006). Pierron IR1354MCa, £6,500; unlisted in S.G. Photo Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 Note: Almost any colour can be created by the mix of the four process printing colours – black, cyan, magenta and yellow – which explains why the loss of one of them impacts on most of the design and not just elements printed only in the missing colour. In this case, the loss of yellow causes the background to appear in a noticeably different shade of blue while everything that should be red is magenta. Prior to a mint block of four appearing in a traffic light collection in south west Ireland in October 2006, it was assumed the various used examples which had appeared over the years in kiloware were colour changlings. The mint block, which has since been split, includes traffic lights which proves the nature and authenticity of the error. quantity: 4 mint, 6 used
