The British War Medal awarded to Lieutenant P. Mighell, Royal Flying Corps, Who Was Shot Down By German Air Ace, Leutnant Julius Buckler - His 16th ´Victory´ Out of a Total of 36 For the Great War British War Medal (Lieut. P. Mighell.), very fine Estimate £ 180-220 Lieutenant Philip Mighell, a native of Beddington, Surrey; Mighell initially served during the Great War with the East Surrey Regiment before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps; on 11.10.1917, as part of 5 Squadron he was Observer in an RE8 piloted by Lieutenant F.C.E. Clarke flying over Rodincourt; here they encountered Buckler, of Jasta 17, and were shot down by him becoming his 16th Victory out of an eventual 36 for the War; Clarke died of his wounds the same day, with Mighell dying of his wounds on the 12th; both men are buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, Pas de Calais France. Buckler went on to be awarded the Pour Le Merite, Iron Cross 1st Class, Golden Military Merit Cross and Wound Badge in Gold - the latter for having been wounded five times in battle.
