A Great War ´Black September´ 1918 Casualty Pair to Second Lieutenant F.A. Browning, Royal Air Force, Late Royal Flying Corps British War and Victory Medals (2.Lieut. F.A. Browning. R.A.F.), VM naming rubbed, good very fine or better (2) Estimate £ 180-220 Second Lieutenant Frederick Adolphus Browning, born Whitstable, Kent, 1899; enlisted in the Army, April 1917, before being commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant Royal Flying Corps, 23.2.1918; after initial training as a Pilot with 191 Squadron he was posted to France for operational service with 51 Squadron, August 1918; he was posted to 101 Squadron (FE2b´s), Famechon, France, September 1918; whilst flying FE2b D9921 he was reported wounded and missing in action, 19.9.1918, he died of his wounds three days later, 22.9.1918 and is buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Somme, France. The month of September 1918 was known as ´Black September´ - during this month the Allies lost approximately 560 aircraft.
