Great Britain 1840 Mulready One Penny Envelopes A180, dated 6 Oct. 1840, addressed to Bishops Stortford with red Maltese Cross cancellation and boxed Winchelsea "No. 1" receiving mark in black on the front, on reverse Rye c.d.s. and red arrival of 7 Oct.; Inscribed under the flap "The last of these disgraceful productions" in the same hand and ink as the address, presumably commenting on the unpopular Mulready design, Britannia additionally defaced by a dramatic erratic black manuscript ink mark, possibly as a further comment on the design; some wrinkles but important and most unusual. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000
